Custom Inflatable Model Production Process

An inflatable model, commonly known as an air model, is widely applied in various scenarios, such as commercial art installation, brand marketing, sports events, festivals and celebrations. Typical products include inflatable arches, inflatable tents, inflatable movie screens, inflatable mascots and so on. The custom design and production of inflatable models is a complex and elaborate process, which generally includes the following steps:

Design Planning

Firstly, the appearance, shape, size and other key parameters of the inflatable model are designed and planned based on customer demands and presentation objectives. This step usually requires sufficient communication and confirmation with the customer.

Rendering Confirmation

Subsequently, the drafting work commences. In the inflatable model industry, the realization of design effects relies on professional software. At present, most manufacturers adopt CAD software for basic modeling. Draftsmen use CAD to carry out simple pattern unfolding based on the fundamental knowledge of inflatable product design. For complex modeling, the advanced Squish unfolding tool in Rhino or the UV Layout function in 3ds Max is employed for precise pattern unfolding.

Material Preparation

Suitable materials are selected for inflatable model production, with common options including rubber, polyurethane, silicone and other specialized inflatable materials. In accordance with design specifications, the materials are cut into the required shapes and dimensions.

Mold Manufacturing

Molds are fabricated based on design drawings and digital models. Common mold production methods include manual carving, CNC carving, 3D printing and other processes. The mold production process must ensure high precision and accurate replication of all details. Membrane materials are cut according to drawing requirements, with strict demands for straight cutting edges. For coated membrane materials, the coating on the welding area of membrane pieces must be polished and removed to ensure consistent width and a uniform, intact surface.

Coating and Color Matching

To endow the inflatable model with a realistic appearance, appropriate pigments and coatings are selected and mixed to achieve the desired color and texture effects. The inflatable model is then colored and toned in line with design requirements. This step demands professional skills and practical experience to guarantee the accurate presentation of colors and details.

Demolding and Shaping

Once the coatings and pigments are completely dry, the inflatable model is gently demolded from the mold. Necessary shaping and finishing operations are subsequently performed to achieve the final intended appearance.

High-Frequency Welding

Before each welding session of membrane pieces, a sample welding test is conducted to determine the optimal welding parameters for the membrane material, which are then strictly followed in formal production. The typeset membrane materials are welded using a rail-type high-frequency welding machine. It is essential to ensure uniform weld width, no obvious bending, smooth transition of curved weld arcs, flat weld surfaces and firm welding joints.

Final Inspection and Packaging

The inflatable model undergoes a detailed inspection and touch-up to eliminate any flaws or defects. It is then packaged properly to protect its integrity during transportation and exhibition.
